Sincere Gratitude

I have been, and I remain, blessed to serve as Minister of Music at the First Baptist Church of Sylva.  Somehow, saying "Thanks" seems way to "simple," or "understated" to express my appreciation for the Homecoming Celebration of my Forty-year tenure as your staff member.  So many people devoted so much expertise, time, and effort seeing to detail that made the day such a happy occasion for me.

Of course, it was my joy to be able to conduct a choir with such a great sound, doing wonderful selections of anthem literature of various styles.  We all had a good time preparing the music, and it made us "feel younger," as we all were younger when so many contributed to music ministry here.  Several have said that we need to "do it again."  I reaped great joy from my connection to them during the whole experience.  Our church provided the event that brought us together.  Thank you.

The naming of the choir room was certainly a surprise to me, and a touching tribute--greatly appreciated.  Your money gift was generous, and I thank all of you for your contributions.  I promise to use it for "fun!"

Finally, to all the people who decorated the MFC so appropriately and beautifully, your efforts were greatly appreciated, and drew the attention of our former choir members at the wonderful meal.  To Jeff and the other staff members, I thank you for all that you did to make this a service centered around great scriptures set to music. Ed Beddingfield, I was touched by your message, and so pleased that you were able to be here for this observance. To Tonja and the kitchen staff, my sincere thanks for your excellent work in having a wonderful meal served to a huge crowd.

There must be many who deserve thanks who I have not mentioned--if you are such a person, please forgive, but know that I am grateful for all that was done.

With love and appreciation,

Bob Holquist

Passport — Already?

Believe it or not, it is time to start planning for next summer’s Passportkids!  Sylva FBC children grades 3–6 will be at Montreat College, June 30–July 3 for a week of learning, fun, Bible study, and more.

Please register to attend by letting Cheryl Beck know as soon as possible.  Space is limited.  A $100.00 deposit is due by November 12.  The total cost for camp is still to be determined.

Clothing Donations Needed

We have a clothes closet for our students in need at Jackson Community School and are currently in need of belts (both male & female), bras/sports bras in larger sizes (L, XL, 2XL). Also, hot weather clothing such as shorts, short sleeve tops, etc. in larger sizes.

I hope we can collect some donations of these items with the help of our congregation. There will be a collection box in the Loving Kindness Room. Thank you for your consideration. –Brooke Drum

Hurray for Our Nursery Workers of the Week!

Thank you to Brooke Drum and her helpers Lucie Moore, Reagan Devoe, and Lexi Allen for
working in the nursery last Sunday.  What a great job you all did cleaning up!

On October 29th, Vanessa Bryson and David McDonald will be in charge of the nursery.
Thank you for helping!

There is still room on the schedule to serve “the least of these”
on Sunday mornings.  It is a blessing to see their smiles and enthusiasm as you spend
time with our infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.
Please contact Cheryl Beck (cabeck@ncsu.edu) if you would like to help.

Dawnings Continues Wednesday, November 1

The third of our of four congregational meetings will be Wednesday, November 1 beginning at 6:00 PM in the Mission and Fellowship Center. A blessing for our potluck meal together will be at 5:30 PM.

Childcare will be provided for children up through the fifth grade in our nursery. Youth are encouraged to be a part of our congregational meeting in the MFC alongside adults.

Dawnings is a narrative-based approach for personal and congregational visioning and discernment. Our four congregational meetings this fall will help us determine together who God is calling us to be and what God is calling us to do. Our entire church's participation in this process is critical to our determining what our future will look like.

"This is what God says,

  the God who builds a road right through the ocean,

  who carves a path through pounding waves,

The God who summons horses and chariots and armies—

  they lie down and then can’t get up;

  they’re snuffed out like so many candles:

“Forget about what’s happened;

  don’t keep going over old history.

Be alert, be present. I’m about to do something brand-new.

  It’s bursting out! Don’t you see it?" Isaiah 43:16-19

Brian Foreman, the Coordinator of Congregational Ministries for the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, comments that "These last two lines of scripture are both encouragement and command. The former encourages us to remember that God is still in control. The latter reminds us of our responsibility to notice and join God in doing something brand new."

"Dawnings is a congregational resource that helps you accomplish both of these things. By leaning into a spiritual discernment process through listening and responding to stories, your congregation will open itself to its place in God's sacred story for the community."

"Congregational postures of prayer and curiosity cultivate a sense of calling, not just for the congregation, before individuals as well. What better way to "be alert, be present," and to be a part of the "something brand new" God is doing!"
