What is ‘First Wednesdays?’
‘First Wednesdays’ is a mid-week gathering that the church will be hosting this fall.
Is ‘First Wednesdays’ something that happens every Wednesday?
No. ‘First Wednesdays’ happen the first Wednesday of each month. Therefore, we’ll have our ‘First Wednesday’ gathering on Wednesday, September 1; Wednesday, October 6; Wednesday, November 3; and Wednesday, December 1.
Should I put these four dates on my calendar?
Yes. Additionally, you should put Sunday, September 19 on your calendar as it’s ‘International Talk Like a Pirate Day.’ (Why do we call pirates, pirates? Because they arrrrrrrrrr!)
What will happen at ‘First Wednesdays?’
We will eat together and enjoy table fellowship with our church family. Beginning at 5:15 PM, you may bring your food offering and put it on a table in the Mission and Fellowship Center. Your food offering doesn’t have to be a pain. Simply bring food for you and your family, plus some to share! If you were going to get six tacos from Taco Bell, bring ten tacos. If you were going to prepare a tuna casserole, bring rolls and some green beans as well. If you were going to pick up a rotisserie chicken from Food Lion, grab some chips and salsa to help share. Don’t over-think it. It’s a potluck, y’all. It’s not intended to be hard. We’ll pray at 5:30 PM, and you can dig in at 5:31 PM (wise, old proverb: A pastor’s long dinner blessing makes for a hostile congregation).
Okay. So, we’re going to eat together beginning at 5:30 PM. What happens next?
At 6:00 PM, we’ll watch one episode of a series that dramatically depicts the life and ministry of Jesus. The series is appropriate for your entire family. We’ll be done by 7:15 PM.
There are a lot of shows, movies, videos, and documentaries about Jesus. What’s so special about this one?
We will be watching a series that premiered a year ago and has garnered much attention. The highly regarded series is a dramatic depiction of Jesus and his followers and feels like the kind of program you might watch in prime-time or stream on Netflix. I have found it to be thoughtful, faithful, and Biblically sound. I want to share it with you as it helps us to see Jesus in a new light. It serves as a great introduction to Jesus for those who might not be familiar. And, it brings awareness to the circumstances and reality of life in First Century, Palestine.
And then there’s this thing called, ‘Third Wednesdays.’ What’s that?
Well, we’re getting ahead of ourselves, of course. But as you can probably tease out, ‘Third Wednesdays’ will happen on the third Wednesdays of the month. We will not be hosting a meal on ‘Third Wednesdays,’ but we will offer a small group Bible Study experience from 6:00 PM to 7:15 PM. Think of it this way: If ‘First Wednesdays’ is an accessible event for everyone, then the Third Wednesday event is specifically for those who want to let down their nets into the deep waters of scripture and to ask the kind of questions you save for a third date.
When does this kick-off again?
In two weeks. Wednesday, September 1.
