Sugar Cookies

A four-generation favorite of our family is this sugar cookie recipe.  My mother always had them in the cookie jar when my children visited her home in Texas, and I’ve always tried to have them when my grandchildren came here!

Ingredients
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 cup shortening
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda

Instructions
Cream together the white sugar, brown sugar and shortening. Add egg and vanilla and mix well.

Sift and add gradually just until well incorporated the following ingredients: flour, salt and baking soda.

Form into balls a little smaller than a walnut by rolling between the palms of both hands.  Flatten with a glass dipped into sugar.  Place two inches apart on a greased cookie sheets, and bake 12 or so minutes (until lightly brown) at 350 degrees.
