Chocolate Sheet Cake

Cake:

  • 2 cups sugar

  • 2 cups flour

  • 1 stick butter

  • 1 cup water

  • 1/2 cup water

  • 1/2 cup shortening 

  • 1 TB vanilla

  • 3 1/2 TB cocoa 

  • 1/2 cup buttermilk

  • 1 tsp soda

  • pinch of salt

  • 2 eggs, beaten

Icing:

  • 1/3 cup milk

  • 1 stick butter

  • pinch of salt

  • 4 TB cocoa 

  • 1 box powdered sugar

  • 1 tsp vanilla

  • 1 cup chopped pecans

  1. Combine sugar & flour in mixing bowl. 

  2. In a sauce pan combine water, shortening, butter & cocoa & bring just to a boil. Pour this hot mixture over the sugar and flour & stir well. 

  3. Add the buttermilk, soda, salt, vanilla & beaten eggs & mix well. 

  4. Pour into greased & floured 11X13 baking pan. 

  5. Bake at 400 for 20 minutes. 

  6. Icing: Bring first 4 ingredients to a boil. Remove from heat & add last ingredients. Stir quickly and spread on hot cake.
